Need help indentifying plants on my land (Florida).

I have two types of plants on my land that I am not sure what they are. Perhaps some of you can assist... My land is in North Central Florida.

Thank you,

Dave

Looks like (1) huckleberry and (2)native holly.

Does the former get dark berries in the fall?

That is exactly what it looked like to me. My folks have some "domesticated holly" growing in their garden. I think I might plant more of the holly around my borders as a natural borders with "attitude" :)

I didn't see the plant in the fall state so I will have to observe it later this year but you gave me some possible ideas of types to research.

Thank you all for the thoughts.

If it is a native huckleberry, it'll put on little white flowers this spring which will fall off and then little green berries mid to late summer that ripen to black in late fall/early winter. (At least they do a couple hundred miles North of your area) It looks similar to the domesticated vatieties, but generally will have fewer, smaller, and not as sweet berries.

If you want a plant with a serious attitude, look into century plants. Those things can hurt, bad.

They also grow good in Florida, parents had a couple.

I'm with you there, Dave. A fence can be jumped but it can be very very difficult to get through a large bush in the right place. There's no way to climb it, usually it is impassable without cutting through it.

Go to your county extension office and get a list of the native plants.

And take a sample with you when you go.

The second set of pics is a "Palatka Holly". Native to central FL. If you want a great barrier plant look up "Spanish Bayonet". It will stop people and most animals.

First one looks like a mayhaw. If it is it'll produce a yellow to red berry depending on the variety. Makes a great jelly.

I agree the second one is holly.

Just an FYI, I think I am about 95% certain of the first set of pictures. I talked to a Beekeeper that said it was a variety of Vaccinium Arboreum or commonly known as farkleberry variety. Based on what I could find online this seems to support that identification.

Doesn't look like the fruit is really that useful from what he said and what ready so I will likely just remove the bush and replace it with blueberries since the soil condition seems to be friendly to blueberry bush varieties.

Any ways, I just wanted to let everyone know that participated. I appreciate all of your input.

Dave
